Why You Need Movement Joints in Shopping Centre Flooring

Movement joints, or expansion joints, are essential for managing natural shifts in a building’s structure, particularly in large spaces like shopping centers. Variations in temperature, humidity, and structural settling can subtly affect a building’s framework, which places stress on flooring. Without movement joints, this can lead to cracks and other damage, especially in tiled areas.

VEDA’s high-quality movement control joints, which we exclusively offer in Ireland, create controlled zones in the flooring, allowing it to expand and contract without damage. This preserves both the aesthetic and structural integrity of the floor and ensures it can handle heavy foot traffic with minimal maintenance.

Technical Consultation for Optimal Results

To ensure we provided the ideal solution, we flew in VEDA’s technical representative to assess the requirements of The Square Shopping Centre, working closely with the project architects. After evaluating the building’s specific needs, the representative provided technical guidance to select a joint with the right movement capacity for the project. Based on this consultation, we opted for the JDH. 6.14 model, which offers excellent flexibility and durability for commercial spaces. Learn more about JDH. 6.14 here.

Project Overview: Minimizing Disruption While Ensuring Safety

To avoid disruption during business hours, our team conducted the work overnight. This involved removing the existing tiles and screed, leveling the recess, and carefully installing the VEDA JDH. 6.14 movement control joints. During the day, we added an anti-slip protection layer level with the surrounding floor finish to ensure maximum safety for shoppers.

After securing the VEDA joints, we finished the project by tiling around the joints to integrate them seamlessly with the surrounding floor, maintaining both a cohesive aesthetic and a durable structure.
